Musings of a 20-something

Thoughts on life, music, fashion, fitness and everything in between. A perspective from the domain of the young and tragically hip.

—The Lucky Ones

It’s new music week here on the blog and I’ll be posting one noteworthy song every day for ya’ll to enjoy. To start you off here’s:

10 Seconds from Every Top-100 Song Since 1959

Want to take a trip down memory lane? This site lets you can listen to a montage of 10 second clips from all of the Top 100 songs from the year of your choice (after 1959). Yes, that means you can re-live everything from your first breakup to your college party days. For an extra bonus, try to pick a year and name as many songs as you can:

A playground for acrobatic adults? The Tempest Freerunning Academy is the first indoor training facility dedicated to the growth and spread of parkour in the state of California. I wonder what sort of insurance policy the owners of this place had to take out…

I find this both fascinating and a little disturbing at the same time. I know light strength training has been shown to be beneficial in youth, but I’m not sure any trainer would recommend this kind of regimen…

Apparently my uncanny ability to hide in department store clothing racks does not qualify me as a ninja. It looks like if I’m going to be able to keep up with my ninja brethren I’m going to have to start hitting the gym more often….

So Tumblr readers, let me tell you a story:

This story begins with a boy that loves social media, blogging, and generally being active in the social sphere. In a twist of fate, this same protagonist gets a sweet gig at a very cool social media agency (www.ignitesocialmedia.com).

However, our hero soon finds that working in the social sphere all day proves to be draining, and in turn his social properties go dormant.

There is however a happy solution! A new and improved outlook on blogging; one that is not shackled to the old ways of the long form, but that fully embraces the rapid content sharing a la Tumblr, Pinterest, and Twitter. So behold, dear readers, a re-vamped blog. From this point forward I will seek to post engaging content that can be quickly absorbed and appreciated, while also not seeming like a chore.

And thus, with the help of a Ryan Gosling lookalike video, our hero steps into a new era of our story….

The Staves: “Mexico” Video

Father-son producing giants Glyn and Ethan Johns have teamed up to co-produce their first record together, adding a trio of charming singers to the impressive roster of voices (Ryan Adams, Ray LaMontagne, Rolling Stones, et al.) they’ve helped put to tape over the years: The Staves, a harmonizing folk group starring sisters Emily, Jessica, and Camilla Staveley-Taylor.

Their LP isn’t due until next year, but this winter brings a teaser EP and official video for that set’s title track, “Mexico.” (Upon first listen, Johns & Son seem to have hit another home run in the new-folk genre.) Check out the above Benji Davies and Jim Field-directed clip.
